ESTIMATION OF STEADY STATE QUEUE DISTRIBUTIONS: Correlated traffic was modeled using linear and threshold autoregressive processes, models for multiplexed variable bit rate (VBR) encoded streams were used to develop an approach for estimating buffer occupancy and the impact of correlated arrivals on delay distribution of buffer occupancy were investigated. Using methods based on probability theory and time series analysis computational techniques were developed for estimating the steady state queue distributions.
MEDICAL IMAGING: Reconstruction of images in Transmission Computed Tomography (TCT) and Emission Computed Tomography (ECT) using statistical techniques were undertaken. Bayesian Maximum A Posteriori techniques were implemented by applying the Expectation Maximization Iterative algorithm. Three types of priors used were, the Gibbs Prior, the cross entropy distance prior and hybrid prior. The potential functions used in the Gibbs prior were the sigmoid and the lncosh function and the parameter settings were optimized for TCT and ECT. Computer simulations were performed on phantoms in 2-D and 3-D object spaces. The quantitative accuracy and resolution of the reconstructed images were considerably improved. The problem of incomplete projections was solved by first using a linear prediction extrapolation scheme and then reconstruction was achieved from the completed projections. The results were quite satisfactory. See CACT Report T94-01
PROBABILISTIC AND STOCHASTIC SYSTEMS: Using martingale theory, developed stochastic differential equations satisfied by smoothed estimates in a general model, derived stochastic differential equations in time delay systems, studied properties of conditional distributions in linear models, and formulated a general class of fault detection problems. Fundamental investigations on the martingale approach to nonlinear filtering and smoothing has been published as a book in 1984 by John Wiley and Sons, New York, under the title, "Nonlinear Filtering and Smoothing". This book was republished with a new preface and errata sheets by Dover Publications in 2005. Introduced time series analysis methods for modeling gyro drift angle data and for modeling an aircraft traversing a runway. Performed extensive analysis of data using statistical modeling by means of two factor experiments to determine the effects of parameters on system performance. Generalized Bartlett's formula in estimation of autocovariance functions and developed new confidence limits for testing for white noise. Investigated navigational sonar system position and velocity estimation errors and established confidence limits. Investigated the distribution of spectral estimators and established their confidence limits. Developed causal probability models for reducing the lateral separation of aircraft in transoceanic flight. Developed and taught courses in probability, stochastic processes, martingales, nonlinear estimation and adaptive estimation with applications to real world problems.
DIGITAL SYSTEMS: Using Butterworth and Chebyshev filters, successfully completed the problem of improving the estimation accuracy of multiple linear regression coefficients in presence of sinusoids and noise. Confidence limits on these regression coefficients were established on the assumption of correlated and uncorrelated noise. Completed investigations on fast Fourier transforms (FFT) and used these techniques for the problem of reconstructing an object from its shadowgraph. Using linear prediction techniques and FFT, complete image reconstructions for different types of truncated data were realized. Presently engaged in Single Photon Emission Tomographic Studies for missing data. Performed fundamental studies on Hilbert transform and developed Hilbert series and obtained a technique for phase refinement. Developed courses on FFT techniques and digital signal processing.
BIOSYSTEMS: Developed and constructed a ballistocardiograph to measure cardiac output non-invasively. Reduced false negative responses obtained from scanners used in detection of tumors. Modeled electrocardiograph (EKG) and electro-encephalograph (EEG) signals using time series.
AEROSPACE SYSTEMS: Investigated problems on error analyses of inertial navigation systems, weather satellite systems and reconnaissance satellite systems. Improved the fire-control accuracy of navigation to guidance transfer by developing several adaptive adjustment methods. Performed extensive research on strap-down inertial navigation systems and associated alignment problems. Developed and taught courses on inertial navigation and guidance systems. Supervised two doctoral dissertations and over twenty master's theses in this area.
CONTROL SYSTEMS: Completed investigations on an aircraft attitude control system with particular reference to the determination of pole sensitivities of various feedback loops. Instrumentation studies on measurement of angular velocity using accelerometers were completed. Developed and taught courses on control systems, optimal control, nonlinear control and estimation theory.
COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS: Studied the problem of interference in the transmission of information. Developed and taught courses on theory of communications and statistical theory of communications.
